Michael Volna serves as Interim Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer at the University of Minnesota. Appointed in August 2026, he provides system-wide executive leadership and operational oversight for the University Budget Office, Investments and Banking, University Finance, Information Technology, University Services, Public Safety, Health, Safety and Risk Management, and Compliance. As Treasurer, he oversees all core treasury functions, including cash and liquidity management, debt financing, investment operations, and financial risk management.
With over three decades of financial leadership at the University, Volna brings deep institutional knowledge and operational continuity to the role. He previously served as Vice President for Finance and Assistant CFO starting in May 2025, and has twice before stepped in as Interim VP of Finance, CFO, and Treasurer. His long-standing tenure includes serving as Associate Vice President for Finance and Controller from 2001 to 2017, alongside earlier leadership roles across the University's central financial unit since joining the institution in 1992. Before his career in higher education, he worked in corporate financial services and public accounting.
Volna also brings significant national higher education leadership to his position. He currently serves as Board Chair of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) and is a past president of the Central Association of College and University Business Officers (CACUBO).
He holds a B.S. in Accounting and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Minnesota. He is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) and a member of both the Minnesota Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.
